To Be or Not to Be: 2. A Special Visit

This is a two book series story that tackles the question of what it means to exist and how deaths can affect those still alive. We view this To Be or Not to Be question mainly through the trials and tribulations of a young 7-year-old girl, Sally Munkton—a girl with a unique character full of doubts and struggling to come to terms with her life. The story, on the whole, is an adventure story that uses the techniques of mystery and suspense to lead the reader to the ultimate ending of the tale. Inimitable characters gloriously colour the series adding to touches of surrealism and a dash of sci-fi. The series aims to lead the young reader into the golden age of reading. It is a tour de force of family drama and in-depth emotional feelings that are unexpectedly sprang on the reader in the most surprising of ways.

The two books can also be viewed as crossover material, in the sense that the story can additionally be enjoyed by adult readers who can especially appreciate the suspense of knowing things about life that they know the young Sally Munkton and her peers cannot understand (dramatic irony). The adult reader is brought back to their childhood in a uniquely entertaining way.

Readers may well see this as a coming-of-age story; particularly at its conclusion, where Sally Munkton exhibits the telltale signs of reaching a higher level of maturity (as if her whole mind has reconnected all its parts on reaching a new understanding of life). The story’s spectacular hair-standing-on-end finale aims to evoke a tremendous explosion of excitement and wonder in the reader. A finale that aims to produce an experience that transcends life itself—as only fiction can do.

In this second book of the two book series, the Munktons, having received an invitation to the New Year’s Honours Congregation to be held at Buckingham Palace, arrive at the palace with some friends. During some adventures in secret tunnels and passageways on the eve of the congregation day, Sally discovers information that suggests that her father achieved something of great significance before he sacrificed his life saving the boy across the road. She discovers that the main award at the conclusion of the congregation is to be for her father—but she doesn’t know exactly what her father had achieved, and cannot even hazard a guess. The mystery deepens …

The mystery of what Sally’s father did is dramatically revealed at the finale of the congregation. Although clues to this mystery are bizarrely given earlier in the story, the conclusion, when it comes, is almost certainly impossible for the reader to have imagined. All the questions and mysteries raised in the book are answered. Ultimately, the conclusion to the mystery is tied to Sally’s understanding of the question … “To Be, Or Not To Be?” Now, be off with you, and prepare yourself to conclude this two book series right old emotional rollercoaster!
