Detective Hamid Pahlavi, like his long departed Iranian father, sported a moustache, and had a haggard but determined look chiselled on a rugged face. He had his mother’s Italian penetrating emerald-green eyes. His black hair was clumpy and streaked grey. Pahlavi’s mind was a beacon of brilliance, and it was difficult not to find oneself in awe of him—Greenidge was no exception. Pahlavi, like Greenidge, was also as English as they come. Cynical, individual, eccentric and packed with genetic goodies accumulated from all over the world.

Greenidge spent almost all his working hours shadowing Pahlavi, which meant spending a fair amount of his time in Pahlavi’s office up high on the thirteenth floor of the main Scotland Yard 20-story building standing proud and tall near the Houses of Parliament. He was excellent at determining the cause of death, but determining the murderer was another matter. And this is where his boss, Pahlavi, came into his own. Greenidge knew he was extremely fortunate to be working under Pahlavi because it meant working on the most prestigious cases in the country, even if he did find Pahlavi’s brilliance frustrating at times. Greenidge was made to sweat blood for the answers that had a habit of falling plumb on to Pahlavi’s lap.
