The “Londoners”, Catherine, Kevin, Sean and Libby, find themselves descending into an incredible sci-fi adventure after a heavy flood causes a landslip in the Dartford Tunnel, close to where they live in South Ockendon, London. Beneath the Dartford Tunnel they discover an ancient though technologically advanced alien underground tunnel. Here they meet an unusual dark matter alien who is the tunnel’s Guardian. He tells the Londoners that the tunnel leads to an impressive ancient alien underground city. But before they can continue and escape the tunnel, each of the Londoners must pass an individual test set by a partnered powerful dark matter alien. Unlike the tunnel Guardian, these dark matter aliens are incredibly intelligent and called the Vertos. Fortunately, the Londoners escape the tunnel, but at the expense of its total annihilation, thus barring them a route back home.

Eventually, along with the tunnel Guardian, the Londoners find themselves in the impressive ancient alien city. The city seems to be uninhabited, but the Londoners soon discover it is inhabited by deadly robots as well as hiding ordinary matter aliens (who had evolved from the city’s original founding aliens).  The Londoners will need to defeat the deadly robots and free the hiding aliens before attempting to find their way out of the city and back to their home. The theme of the story is that nothing can ever be made completely secure—and so the four intrepid adventurers, Catherine, Kevin, Sean and Libby hope to find a way back home from their seemingly unescapable underground city.
